The major periods of jewelry include Georgian (1714-1830) characterized by nature themes often utilizing gemstones set in gold and backed with silver. The Victorian period (1830-1901) characterized by three distinct periods (Romantic, Grand, Asthetic) included the use of gold, mourning jewelry, cameos, coral, jet with motifs such as etruscan revival, hearts, serpents to name a few.
The Belle Epoque period extends from (1890-1920) and includes platinum and filigree with extensive use of diamonds, pearls, etc in floral, wreath, and spray motifs. In contrast, the Art Nouveau period (1895-1910) is characterized by sensual flowing lines with the use of enamel and colored gemstones in nature motifs such as dragonflies, nymphs and trailing vines. The Art Deco (1920- 1940) period is characterized by beautiful geometric lines in platinum or white gold with extensive use of diamonds, sapphires, and rubies.
